Based on the true story of a young patient with cancer, we follow Ahmed in his efforts to reach health facilities outside the Gaza Strip. After initially successful treatment with chemotherapy in Gaza, doctors tell Ahmed that there may be a recurrence of the cancer. To find out if the cancer has recurred, Ahmed needs a scan that is not available in the Gaza Strip. To reach the scanner, Ahmed needs a permit from Israeli authorities to exit Gaza. In 2017, almost half of patient applications to exit the Gaza Strip were delayed or denied. Three-fifths of patients missed at least one appointment because of unsuccessful permit applications. Barriers to accessing lifesaving treatments and investigations put the health of patients at risk and create uncertainty and anxiety for those applying. Enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being.
